Triton Capsule - Painting
The Inspiration and materials for the Triton Capsule work is the Triton restaurant in Cardiff, CA built in 1977 by local San Diego artist and architect James Hubbell. The latest rendition of the restaurant closed in 2014 and is currently being dismantled and rebuilt by the new owners. The materials used for this new work are taken from the restaurant, 50 year old Douglas Fir and Redwood beams and copper pieces, are all being upcycled into new art forms. The pieces reference Hubbells' interest in the ocean and nature.
The paintings are the only pieces in the Triton Capsule that do not use any of the materials taken from the restaurant, but reference his use of stained glass within the restaurant and in other projects. There are two categories of paintings, one group references Hubbells’ stained glass works and the other uses imagery of under sea kelp forests.
Kelp Forest
The kelp forest paintings are all made with oil on canvas.
Stained Glass Reference
